Shooting better night photos on iPhone used to be frustrating — everything came out blurry, grainy, or flat.
But with ProRAW, Night Mode, and a few simple techniques, you can take cinematic night shots straight from your iPhone — no DSLR needed.
All of these images were shot on iPhone ProRAW and edited using our Night Collection iPhone ProRAW Presets, built specifically for low-light photography. Here’s how to get results like this.
1. Shoot During Blue Hour
The easiest way to make night photos look better? Shoot a little earlier.
This shot was taken just after sunset, when there’s still some colour in the sky. The city lights are on, but the sky isn’t pitch black yet, which makes everything look richer and less noisy.
If you can, plan your shots for this “blue hour.”

2. Don’t Let Night Mode Overdo It
Night Mode is great, but sometimes it tries too hard and makes photos look fake.
In this shot, we set the exposure to just a couple of seconds instead of letting the phone max it out.
It kept the mood without washing everything out.
Tap the Night Mode icon and adjust the slider yourself — you’ll get way more natural results.

3. Look for Pockets of Light
At night, your best shots come from finding light.
This one works because the little phone booth is lit perfectly, standing out against the darker street.
Look for street lamps, neon signs, car headlights — anything that creates contrast and draws attention to your subject.

4. Use Shadows and Silhouettes
Shadows don’t have to hide detail — they can make your photos more dramatic.
In this shot, the boats are completely silhouetted against the sunset.
There’s no need to see every detail because the contrast between light and dark tells the story on its own.
The same idea works at night.
If you’ve got a strong light source — like a street lamp, neon sign, or even car headlights — try positioning your subject so they’re backlit.
The darker shapes against brighter backgrounds instantly make the photo feel more cinematic.

5. Shoot in ProRAW
If your iPhone supports it, turn on ProRAW.
It’s one of the biggest upgrades you can make for night photography.
Take the below shot, for example.
The sky is dark, the buildings are glowing, and the ocean is catching just enough light to create soft reflections.
Shooting in ProRAW lets you capture all of that detail without losing the highlights or crushing the shadows.
It also helps keep your images clean and sharp, even when you brighten them later.
There’s less noise, more dynamic range, and more control when you edit — which is huge when you’re working with low light.
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Apple ProRAW, and switch it on.

6. Use Leading Lines
City scenes can get messy at night.
One way to make your shots look more intentional is to use leading lines.
In this photo, the winding roads guide your eye straight through the city.
Look for roads, bridges, or light trails that naturally lead the viewer into the frame.

7. Keep Your iPhone Steady
Night photos often need longer exposures, which means any little shake can blur the shot.
For this Porsche photo, we rested the phone on a backpack to keep it steady.
If you don’t have a tripod, lean against a wall or railing.
Even holding your breath while you shoot can make a difference.

8. Play With Reflections
Water, glass, and wet streets are your best friend at night.
In this shot, the lights bouncing off the water add depth and colour without any extra editing.
And if the water was still, it would have looked even better!
Tilt your phone slightly down to bring more of the reflection into the frame — it instantly makes the shot look more cinematic.

9. Don’t Forget the Details
Wide city shots are great, but the smaller details often make the photo more interesting.
In the shot below, it’s the taillights, the reflections on the paint, and the texture of the street that give it character.
The angle of the car and the way the headlights hit the ground also guide your eye naturally towards the skyline in the background.

10. Use Presets When Editing
Night photos can get noisy, and heavy editing often makes them worse.
That’s why we created the Night Collection iPhone ProRAW Presets.
They’re designed to clean up your shots, keep colours natural, and give your photos a consistent, cinematic finish.
Apply a preset, tweak if needed, and you’re done.
