How to Shoot ProRAW on iPhone in 2 Minutes

Sometimes your iPhone photos don’t quite capture how a moment looked in real life — and that’s where ProRAW on iPhone can help.

It’s one of the easiest ways to get higher quality photos from your iPhone, especially if you plan to edit them.

So we’ll explain what ProRAW is (in simple terms), how to enable it, when to use it, and why it can make a difference — even if you’re not a professional.

What Is ProRAW on iPhone?

ProRAW is Apple’s version of a RAW photo format — something that gives you more flexibility when editing.

When you take a regular photo, your iPhone automatically processes it.

It adjusts colours, sharpness, contrast, and compresses the file to make it smaller.

RAW is like having all the ingredients before baking a cake.

You can adjust everything — add more sugar, less flour, change the flavour — because nothing’s been baked yet.

A regular photo (like JPEG) is like a cake that’s already been baked.

It’s done.

What iPhones Support ProRAW?

ProRAW is only available on the Pro models:

iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max
iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max
iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max
iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max
iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max

If you're using a standard model (e.g. iPhone 13 or 14), you won’t see this option — but you can still get great results using the built-in editing tools or presets.

How to Turn On ProRAW (Takes 30 Seconds)

To enable ProRAW on iPhone and unlock its full capabilities:

Go to Settings
Tap Camera
Tap Formats
Under Photo Capture, turn on Apple ProRAW
Then, set ProRAW Resolution to 48MP (only available on iPhone 14 Pro and later)

That’s it.

Now when you open the Camera app, you’ll see a small RAW button at the top.

Tap it to turn ProRAW on or off.

Keep in mind that 48MP ProRAW files can be large (often 70–80MB), so use this only when you want maximum detail for editing.

When Should You Use It?

You don’t need to use ProRAW for every photo.

But it’s useful when:

You’re shooting something important and want the best quality
The lighting is tricky (too bright or too dark)
You plan to edit the photo in Lightroom or another app
